Kong-Ans in the Kwan Um School of Zen

With Zen Master Bon Yeon (Jane Dobisz)

Session 1:

A famous Master once said, “Understanding only goes as far as that which it can understand.” Our understanding serves us quite well for most purposes, as we navigate through our lives at home, at school, and at work. For certain other questions though, the big questions of our human condition, our understanding comes to a screeching halt.

In this class, Zen Master Bon Yeon will share her experience of several decades of working with Zen kong-ans. She will teach some different examples of kong-ans that have helped her in her own life, and hopefully they will help you with yours! Zen kong-an practice is as valuable and as applicable today as it was thousands of years ago.

Session 2:

Correct Situation, Correct Relationship, and Correct Function

Our founding teacher, Zen Master Seung Sahn, focused very heavily (and for his entire teaching career) on the value of keeping our correct situation, relationship, and function, moment to moment. In this talk, Zen Master Bon Yeon will use a well-known kong-an to show how these three factors come together in expressing oneself in the context of the kong-an, and help us to attain correct life.

About the teacher:
